Future Regulations
Customers don't typically purchase a vehicle because it meets emissions or fuel economy standards, but rather for style, power, safety and performance. Although some are motivated by good fuel economy and low noise, it’s difficult to sell clean and efficient vehicles without a bottom-line motivation to seek out these attributes. But vehicle manufacturers can’t sell style, power or performance without also ensuring that vehicles offered to consumers meet existing market regulations.
This challenge requires efficient and precise approaches to solving the issue of regulations compliance. Each level of technology added to a vehicle introduces additional costs. Without clear market drivers for lower emissions and/or better fuel economy, the challenge lies in identifying and implementing technologies that lead to compliance while being efficient, low-cost and robust.
Future regulations

FEV engineers are researching solutions to the challenges presented by future regulations in many different global markets. In a marketplace in which a single vehicle might be homologated into multiple global markets, our customers value our international experience.
There are many approaches to solving future emissions regulations, including combustion system modifications, exhaust gas aftertreatment, thermal system optimization, variable valve timing, fuel injection system changes and others.
Despite very stringent Federal Tier 2 emission standards in the United States, efforts are being made to introduce diesel engines back into the U.S. market. To succeed, these vehicles must comply with emissions standards over 120,000 miles while maintaining excellent fuel economy. FEV’s solutions with high-pressure common-rail fuel systems, low sulfur diesel fuel, NOx adsorber catalysts (NAC), selective catalytic reduction (SCR), and diesel particle filters (DPFs), allow the development of powertrain systems with the potential to comply with the light-duty Tier 2 emission requirements.

catalytic reduction
FEV's development of SCR technology has resulted in a solid SCR system based on ammonia carbamate and continued development of urea-based SCR systems. These SCR systems have already demonstrated their feasibility in both light and heavy duty applications.
FEV engineers are investigating new combustion systems such as homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) systems, as well as working with technologies to improve EGR tolerance and boosting technologies to allow for cleaner combustion.
