Large Engines
FEV offers a full range of engineering services for large bore engines. These services include component development as well as complete development support for new engines, beginning with the concept phase and continuing through to the start-of-production. All of the latest design tools necessary in addressing the varied demands presented by large bore engine development efforts are available at FEV.
Since FEV maintains such a wide range of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools, the design effort can, in most cases, be directly performed with the customer‘s preferred CAD platform. Beginning with the earliest phases of the design, structural analyses for the mechanical and thermal optimization of the components (load, deformation, etc.) support the design effort. This approach represents a significant time and cost savings by avoiding a considerable portion of the usual experimental development testing.
FEV offers mechanical development services, including functional and endurance testing of individual components and complete engines. Depending on the size and power of the engines, tests with cylinder engines can be alternatively performed either at FEV or within the customer’s own facilities. Typically, the decision is made on the basis of the investment required and the overall program cost.
At FEV, process development (injection, combustion and turbo-charging) is a core engine development technology. FEV has developed a specialized large-bore single cylinder research engine that is adaptable to different engine configurations (e.g. bore and stroke). The engine can be operated with distillate fuel as well as heavy fuel oil and gases.
