FEV extends its battery test center to meet demand for the batteries of the future
The automotive industry is setting the course to e-mobility. As a result, international engineering service provider FEV with headquarter in Aachen, Germany, is expanding its development and testing services for advanced, high-voltage battery systems. FEV announced a significant expansion of its battery test center near Paris, France, which will go into operation in 2018. The new 600 m² building will contain four walk-in chambers, four battery-pack chambers with a test capacity of up to 1,200 V. In addition to that, up to 300 testing channels for battery cells will be offered. The state-of-the-art test center offers climate controlled test cells and real-time road, vehicle and powertrain simulation capabilities, thus enabling battery testing in its individual application scenarios.
“We are confident that this test center is a future-proof expansion of our capacities and will meet battery development needs for many years,” explained Professor Stefan Pischinger, President and CEO of the FEV Group. “However, there is much more to come: In addition to our site near Paris, we are also planning major expansions in China. The global expansion of testing capacities for e-mobility also includes test cells for electric drivetrains.”
The expansion of the battery test center is one major step in a series of actions FEV has taken, and will be taking, to expand its electronics and electrification resources: Earlier in 2017, FEV acquired the e-mobility and high-voltage battery development specialist EVA Fahrzeugtechnik GmbH. With more than 220 experts, EVA develops high-power, high-voltage batteries that meet strict requirements regarding energy content, range, resistance, temperature resistance, weight and costs.
Long track record in the development of innovative battery systems
Extensive knowledge combined with the new battery testing capacities puts FEV in a position to offer advanced research services for developing the batteries of the future. To date, FEV has performed about 50 battery development projects, many of which are related to various OEM mass-production programs. Behind the success of these programs stand both, the means for high-tech development and an experienced battery development team. A core system for FEV’s battery development services is a battery management system, which, together with optimized algorithms, allows for highly reliable and stable control of the battery. Thanks to its use in a variety of projects, the system is very mature and very flexible, with the capability to accommodate any battery concept.
