The tailored further optimization of the classical ICE towards higher efficiency levels in all-day use as well as lowered CO2 output and minimized pollutant emissions in real world operation characterizes a key aspect of future product development. Optimization of engine mechanics towards lower friction and minimized losses, enhancement of the combustion process with new functionalities for improved efficiency and lowered engine-out emissions, further refinement of highly capable exhaust aftertreatment topologies for ultra-low tailpipe emissions in real world operation and upgrading of engine control logics to more precise and rapid adjustment of optimal parameter settings highlight the major headlines for the various technical sessions. The electrification of the next generation Diesel engine, either on cost-effective 48V base or even more related to powerful high voltage systems display another very promising approach to combine the advantages of different engineering sectors and create synergies for the future.
Despite the still ongoing public discussions the modern Diesel engine represents - on a more rational base and meanwhile confirmed by a number of convincing products on the market - still a highly attractive platform for a future-oriented propulsion system for dedicated light-duty vehicle applications, even under more tightened regulatory boundary conditions and an altering market environment.

The 5th edition of FEV’s international expert conference "Diesel Powertrains 3. 0" is going to be hosted in Rouen, France on July 2–3,  2019.
