FEV Presents Innovative Development Solutions at the Vienna Motor Symposium

Aachen/Vienna, May 2019 – Vienna will once again be the international “engine capital” for the next three days. For the 40th time, the Motor Symposium will take place at the Hofburg Congress Centre, where the automotive industry will present its latest powertrain developments. The renowned engineering service provider, FEV, will present mobility solutions that can make a significant contribution to achieving the climate targets. The exhibits on display will provide visitors with insights into the innovative technologies that can be experienced in demonstrator vehicles on site.

Turnkey vehicle development from a single source
“FEV has developed into an engineering service provider that covers the entire spectrum of vehicle development from a single source. From the powertrain, including transmissions to individual drive and vehicle modules to complete mobility concepts,” is how Professor Stefan Pischinger, President & CEO of the FEV Group, describes the scope of services offered by the Aachen-based company. Interested parties can experience this for themselves at the FEV stand. Numerous solutions for efficient powertrains – conventional and electrified – will be presented on site. In the field of vehicle development, FEV will share the fully electric vehicle concept “SVEN”, which has been developed by share2drive GmbH as a turnkey project tailored to the specific requirements of carsharing. This highly innovative vehicle concept offers carsharing providers significant added value through a high degree of customizability, practicality and cost-effectiveness. At the same time, “SVEN” meets the needs of urban, agile and environmentally conscious carsharing users.

48 V-drive for different applications
As an innovative drive module, FEV presents a 48 V axis in Vienna, which creates new application possibilities for the 48 V technology currently mainly used in passenger cars. The axle was designed for use in light municipal utility vehicles such as sweepers or small dump trucks – in order to reduce their emissions in the city to zero. FEV's concept is designed for use on components already available in the market and offers a solution that is as cost-effective and quickly accessible as possible. In addition, the axle can be configured in a number of ways – for example with one or two electric motors, different transmission ratios, and also optionally with wheel brakes. The inverter integrated in the electric machine meets ASIL (Automotive Safety Integrity Level) B. In total, the unit (with two electric engines) delivers a maximum axle torque of 1,500 Nm.

Efficient gasoline engine
A 1-litre, 3-cylinder Otto DI engine, which FEV presents at the Motor Symposium as a product of successful series development, was developed on behalf of a customer. The “HONDA 1.0l VTEC Turbo” is the result of a cooperation with HONDA R&D Co. Ltd., in which FEV was able to demonstrate its expertise from concept to series release. The new, 1-liter Otto engine is the product of notions of downsizing, which led to the engine being made smaller but more efficient. The result is a more powerful and, at the same time, much more economical gasoline engine with a maximum torque of 200 Nm. It meets today's strict emission requirements of the target markets in China and Europe and is currently installed in the Honda Civic

Saving time through virtual calibration 
The highly efficient, simulation-based calibration platform, VCAP, shifts a significant portion – up to 50 percent – of the demanding ECU calibration according to the WLTC, WHTC, and RDE standards to virtual XiL test benches. This significantly reduces the number of real engine and vehicle tests under a variety of conditions, such as temperature or altitude, and thus reduces development time. The particular advantage of VCAP is the special collaborative environment which enables the test teams to share and work on the same models, instruments, and variable configurations. The model accuracy remains identical from the MiL phase until validation at the test bench. Applications of VCAP include, among others, the partial and full load calibration under normal and extreme conditions (RDE), emission calibration, exhaust after treatment calibration and OBD calibration.

FEV's stand at the Motor Symposium is located on the ground floor of the Vienna Hofburg. In addition, several demonstrator vehicles with different technologies of the development service provider will be presented in the outdoor area.
