Zero CO2 Mobility
The European emission reduction goals, ratified in the Paris agreement, require major CO2 emission reductions from the transportation sector. However, there appears to be little or no consensus about the best solution for achieving these goals.
Increasingly, the experts agree on the conclusion that, while propulsion system electrification is an important component of the solution, it is not the only approach for achieving CO2-neutral mobility. In particular, when “well-to-wheel” rather than “tank-to wheel” efficiency is considered, alternative fuels become increasingly interesting as solutions.
Achieving a balanced fleet strategy requires focus on needs-based propulsion system solutions that assure sustainable and clean mobility. In this sense, a mixture of electrification, optimized combustion engines and synthetic fuels appears to be a promising combination. While e-vehicles can lower local emissions in short distance and inner-city driving if they can penetrate the market insufficient quantities, synthetic fuels represent a good means for minimizing CO2 emissions from the conventional internal combustion engines in existing fleets. As a result, the percentage of renewable energy across the mobility sector is directly increased with fuels based on electricity. In combination with further optimization of the combustion process, CO2 emissions can be minimized, approaching zero emissions.
