Powertrain Mechanics
Powertrain Dynamics
Powertrain dynamics is the interaction of moving components and
their structural mechanics, with both being investigated using
measurement and simulation tools.
The key to success is the flexibility of refining the method for support work or troubleshooting scenarios from the early project concept phase up to the SOP. In other words: " using the right tool at the right time".
Standard layouts are being set up as well as completely innovative
systems, such as variable valvetrain concepts or variable compression
ratio cranktrain systems. Analyses of the subsystems are applied
separately or fully coupled depending on the development target.
FEV's highlights in the field of powertrain dynamics include:
- Advanced Multi-Body-Simulations (MBS) using Virtual Engine by FEV®
- Conducting a sophisticated explicit FEA of the piston group dynamics, (including oil consumption, blow-by, friction and wear) based on commercial software packages
- Special measurement capabilities for the validation of MBS/FEA and troubleshooting such as piston secondary motion, piston ring twisting and valve seat velocity
Additional scopes of work include:
Cranktrain Development
- Crankshaft vibration measurement
- Connecting rod shape optimization
- Piston fatigue analysis
- Piston ring twisting simulation
Timing Drive Development
- Chain force measurements
- MBS of belt drive dynamics
- Detail layout of gear drives
Valvetrain Development
- Conventional valvetrain layouts
- Developments of variable solutions, with mechanical solutions like the camless EMVT system
- High speed valvetrain optimization
Accessory Drive Development - Layout and optimization of various accessory drives such as belt, chain, gear and axle drives
