NVH & Vehicle Physics
FEV’s Expertise Ensures Success. FEV has over 30 years of corporate experience conducting industrial and scientific NVH projects worldwide. The Vehicle Physics and Acoustics division employs more than 100 highly qualified NVH specialists in Germany and the United States. We have a solid reputation as a reliable engineering partner to OEMs and suppliers.
NVH Activities & Tools
FEV employs state-of-the-art commercially available tools as well as proprietary methodologies to offer a wide range of test and CAE based NVH engineering services.
nVH for Production Readiness
Excellent NVH has become a vital vehicle development target, as it contributes to product quality, driving pleasure and customer satisfaction. FEV provides value to our clients at all stages of the product development process.
Sound Design & Troubleshooting
FEV's utilizes a proprietary suite of tools offer the potential to design the sound as well as systematically troubleshoot challenging NVH problems in a time and cost effective manner.
Vehicle Integration
FEV uses a full systems NVH approach to integrating powerains in vehicles, thus offering solutions optimized at the vehicle level.
Vehicle NVH Development
FEV routinely conducts full veicle "turn-key" NVH development for our clients. These development programs are typically conducted in close cooperation between OEM specialists, suppliers, and FEV.
Powertrain NVH
FEV provides an unnmatched wealth of knowledge in the area of powertrain NVH.
Transmission NVH
FEV's specialists understand the complex interactions betwe enengine, transmission, driveline, and the vehicle chassis, as it relates to a vehicle's NVH behavior.
Combustion Process Noise
FEV has developed specific tools to optimize the combustion process induced noise in the vehicle, while understanding complex trade-offs with respect to fuel economy, performance, and emissions.
Diverse Applications
FEV's knowledge of NVH and structural dynamics provides guidance to our non-automotive customers to quickly solve complicated NVH issues.
Melody of Driving
FEV's research in the field of music and acoustics guides the development of desired "sound character" in automobiles.
NVH Research Activities
FEV works on internally and externally funded research programs to push the envelope in NVH refinement in a wide range of applications.

Engine and powertrain level NVH investigations (conducted in isolation) used to be very common in the past. While isolated engine and powertrain NVH investigations are still important in the NVH refinement process, it has become apparent that a full systems approach, viewing the vehicle as a system is much more efficient in finding optimized solutions to interior as well as exterior noise and vibration problems. The full vehicle approach to powertrain integration and NVH refinement has become a standard procedure at FEV. To reflect this change, FEV's global division in charge of NVH is called Vehicle Physics/Acoustics. Its activities incorporate all NVH relevant aspects dealing with powertrain, vehicle structural dynamics/acoustics, as well as vehicle dynamics. In keeping with the needs of the industry to obtain optimized NVH solutions with reduced "time to market" in a cost effective manner (reduced physical prototype hardware), FEV's NVH divisions use advanced CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) tools and "hybrid" (testing/CAE) methods, in addition to targeted NVH testing.
Our range of projects includes a variety of tasks such as single engine component optimization, low noise powertrain development from concept to SOP, vehicle integration and calibration as well as full vehicle NVH development.According to our philosophy, NVH optimization at FEV is always focused on the final product - the vehicle - and NVH related activities are implemented throughout the entire development process up to production release. We also tackle challenges outside of the automotive field, including NVH optimization of industrial and outdoor machinery, as well as marine applications.
Our partnership with universities such as the Technical University of Aachen, with its internationally renowned Institute for Internal Combustion Engines, as well as our continuous involvement in industrial and publicly funded research projects ensure that our methodologies are always up to date and thorough.
We believe that today's NVH challenges can be efficiently solved through a full systems approach represented by comprehensive NVH development including interdisciplinary project teams. The close cooperation with our clients is characterized by:
- Open partnership
- High flexibility and short response times
- On-site testing and resident engineers
- Full data compatibility with our clients
- Transfer of NVH expertise and methodologies
The high quality standard of our work is ensured by maintaining a well qualified staff, modern testing equipment/facilities, and cutting-edge NVH simulation tools and methods.
