FEV Motorentechnik GmbH has been presented with the eCarTec Award 2009 at the at the “eCarTec” show in Munich. The award was given for an FEV plug-in electric vehicle, based on the Fiat 500, with a Range Extender Module and a LI-ion battery in the category of "Drive Technology, Electrical Systems, Test Systems".

One of the central requirements in modern vehicle development is the reduction of climate-relevant CO2 emissions. The primary energy source of electricity, preferably produced from renewable resources, offers the best conditions to achieve this goal. The continually progressing state of development of LI-ion battery has brought this technology further to the forefront. The principle-based restricted range of electric vehicles has been expanded through a range extender module so that for the consumer a clearly improved vehicle utility arises.

FEV integrated the E-Traction components into an existing production vehicle. The space formerly used for the combustion engine is now used for the electric drive components. The remaining free space in the engine compartment can be used for either additional battery modules or as an alternative location for installing the Range Extender Module. The LI-ion battery was developed by FEV and integrated as a part of the vehicle’s floor and placed near the longitudinal chassis beam. The Range Extender Module was placed near the fuel tank, which was reduced to 12L. The useable passenger compartment and cargo space of the vehicle remain unchanged.

  • Vehicle integration of the E-Traction components
  • Vehicle application and security concept (E-gas security)
  • Electric traction motor with a 45 kW capacity
  • Under floor LI-ion battery with an energy content of 12 kWh
  • Range Extender Module with 20 kW electrical power output
  • Pure electric cruising range: ~ 100 km
  • Additional range of the Range Extender Module: ~200 km

The vehicle was developed by FEV and is designed to be completely modular for testing various E-Traction components, such as different electric motors, batteries and Range Extender Modules. Due to the high demand for electric vehicles, FEV is constructing a small production run of these vehicles for fleet testing.
